MIKIS THEODORAKIS – 100 YEARS ZORBA THE GREEK

MIKIS THEODORAKIS – 100 YEARS ZORBA THE GREEK

And the most beloved soundtracks by the legendary icon of global music

Presented by the most renowned Greek orchestra representing the history and spirit of Greek music – Estoudiantina Neas Ionias, under the artistic direction of Andreas Katsigiannis, a close collaborator of Mikis Theodorakis. Theodorakis personally entrusted him with the reinterpretation and re-orchestration of many of his works and instrumental themes.

For the first time, the complete music of Zorba the Greek will be performed live – using the original instruments from the very first recording!

The sound of bouzoukis and lutes will blend with the tones of the santouri, clarinet, and traditional violin, merging with orchestral arrangements that reflect the unique musical language of Mikis Theodorakis – a powerful meeting of East and West.

A truly unique concert experience that combines orchestral depth with traditional Greek instruments and the unforgettable compositions of one of the most important artists of the 20th century. A performance that highlights the originality, authenticity, and emotional power of Theodorakis’ music.

In addition to Zorba, the program includes iconic selections from his legendary film scores for Z, Serpico, and The Honeymoon Song – music that shaped the sound of international cinema.

The Honeymoon Song was originally composed in 1959 by Mikis Theodorakis with lyrics by William Sansom for the British film Honeymoon (Luna de Miel), directed by Michael Powell. Performed in the film by Marino Marini and his Quartet, it became a romantic recurring theme. The song gained international fame when The Beatles covered it during a BBC radio session in 1963. Paul McCartney was especially fond of the melody and later produced a version for Mary Hopkin’s debut album Post Card (1969).

In the second part of the program, some of Theodorakis’ most iconic songs will be performed – musical works that became timeless symbols of freedom, hope, and cultural identity. These songs, often set to the poetry of renowned Greek writers, have been sung in many languages and have brought people together around the world.

Throughout the entire concert, previously unreleased video footage from the life and work of Mikis Theodorakis will be shown, adding a powerful visual dimension and bringing audiences closer to the spirit and journey of the composer.

A moving finale awaits the audience: the musicians and singers will perform together with Mikis Theodorakis himself, through an emotional audio-visual montage, creating a symbolic and heartfelt conclusion that unites the live performers with the legacy of the Maestro.
